About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Oncology website. Oncology is a research and teaching-oriented department, with expertise spanning basic to population and clinical sciences.

The Department of Oncology at Wayne State University is a unique, urban-based integrated center of research, patient care and education, dedicated to the prevention, early detection, treatment and eventual eradication of cancer.  We work with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to become a leader in integrating world class cancer physicians, researchers and educators in programs that advance our knowledge of cancer. We are committed to excellence in patient care, pursuing research efforts through NIH, foundations or industrial clinical studies, establishing new standards of clinical care, working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with other institutions in our research efforts.

Professor Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., is the Chair of the Department of Oncology and Associate Dean for Cancer Programs in the School of Medicine at Wayne State University.  Dr.  Bepler is also the President and CEO of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The Department of Oncology is comprised of full-time M.D. clinical faculty and Ph.D. faculty and is one of the largest and most diverse departments in terms of faculty membership. A core component of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department is home to researchers who study cancer from many disciplines.
